Are pages like this being maintained, or deleted in favor of catagories? - Marshman 20:56, 20 May 2005 (UTC)
- Both are being maintained, as they serve different purposes. Notably, red links can't be added to categories! But this one seems to be in need of some work, as the only entry in Category:Cities in Hawaii is Honolulu. Andrewa 18:29, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
- Not surprising. Honolulu is the only City in Hawaii. One could possibly argue that Hilo and Kahului and Lihue (not) might also "qualify". The list here is of places in Hawaii and towns in Hawaii, not cities by anyone's definition. And since red links are links that go nowhere, I find that a distinction of dubious value. - Marshman 22:00, 14 July 2005 (UTC)
- OK, so now you're saying that the content of this article is inaccurate? If you're sure of this, then why don't you fix it? That's the idea of a wiki as I understand it!
- I'm no geographer, and I was last in Hawaii at the age of five, so my local knowledge isn't to be relied upon, but even so I wondered about this list. But then, I wonder what the contributor intended? Maybe they meant city in the sense of "Cities" include municipalities and other civil divisions, including cities, towns, villages, hamlets, townships, unincorporated communities, sections of municipalities, and neighborhoods (see WikiProject Cities). See also city: In most parts of the world cities are generally substantial and nearly always have an urban core, but in the United States many incorporated areas which have a very modest population, or a suburban or even mostly rural character, are designated as cities. As I said, I'm no geographer! IMO we need some expert advice here.
- Some Wikipedians have repeatedly proposed that categories should replace all lists. That's what I thought you were asking above, and I can answer that: This proposal has not been adopted AFAIK, for the reasons I gave above, and so both categories and lists are being maintained for the moment.
- But, if this list reduces to one entry, as both you and the current contents of the matching category suggest it might, then IMO it will be a candidate for deletion, unless it is part of a larger systematic project of lists. There's no infobox, and surpisingly, there doesn't seem to be any WikiProject geography, nor WikiProject US geography, despite there being a WikiProject UK geography and a great deal of work being done on US geography. - I will fix. I think the common sense of "city" is as you first describe it. And I do not think anyone is really maintaining this list - Marshman 17:42, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
- I preach caution, and I didn't say that the category was correct and the list wrong, you did. ISTM that US geographers use the word city in a significantly different sense to the one you and I probably both regard as common. See Fruitland Park, Florida for example. - Thanks. We need to check that out first, I agree - Marshman 19:06, 26 July 2005 (UTC)
