Provinces
[edit]I think it would be better if the cities/towns etc. were arrange by province, as with List of cities in Pakistan, reflecting India's size and regional diversity. Thoughts? Sdrawkcab 22:23, 15 February 2006 (UTC)sdrawkcab
I agree, since an alphbetical list should already be available from the "City in India" category or somesuch.
Good point by Sdrawkcab. I agree --Aryan wiki (talk) 18:43, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
Adding to this list
[edit]Please, if you're going to add to this list, try to follow these guidelines:
- Please don't add towns or villages. I am not making a judgement on their worthiness to be included either on the list or in Wikipedia but if they are not cities, please no.
- Please add new cities in the correct place by alphabetical order. Don't just bung them on the end of the list for the letter they begin with.
- Please be sure they are spelled correctly and are not already included under their correct spelling.
- If you add a city and it displays in red lettering, there is no article for that city. Please consider beginning at least a small article on that city. Others will come along and fix the article if you will make a beginning.

Inclusion criteria
[edit]There should be an inclusion criteria as to what is considered to be a town, city and metro. =Nichalp «Talk»= 06:13, 14 April 2007 (UTC)
- Population would be a good criteria, IMO.--Seraphiel 10:04, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
Indian population census has been carried out every 10 years, the latest being the fourteenth in February-March 2001. So we have 10 years old data of population of Indian cities to take decision for categorise city or town. I think good criteria is Municipal corporation. If city has Municipal corporation we can consider it is as city.Shivcharan (talk) 05:50, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

Analysis of disambiguation tags
[edit]States and territories from Category:Cities and towns in India have been checked for the way disambiguation is done. The most common way is "X, statename" or "X, districtname". The exceptions which could be turned in using the same system are listed below. E.g. Moreh, India is the only city/town in Manipur to use ", India". It could be changed to use Moreh, Manipur. States or territories not listed do not use "X, India" or "X (town/city)".

[edit]Updated 2011 column alongside added an extra column as population size class. I did for 'A'. Please help in completing cities in other letters also. Vin09 (talk) 11:35, 5 May 2014 (UTC)
rename?
[edit]This is not really a "list by population" because (unless I'm missing something) there is no way to sort the cities and towns by population, other than within the individual starting letters. Maybe it should be renamed? Barnabypage (talk) 09:08, 15 August 2014 (UTC)

List of cities and towns in India by population → List of towns in India by population – As per suggestion from Talk:List_of_cities_in_India_by_population#Requested_move_16_August_2015 discussion by User:Jenks24 Vin09 (talk) 05:48, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
- Support, I think this is now uncontroversial move and should have been moved as some discussion has already happened regarding this issue. We already have List of cities in India by population so it is not necessary to keep word "city" in this title. As per discussion we are including settlements having population 100,000 or more in List of Indian cities by population, other smaller towns we can include in this list. We just have to decide lower limit of the town. Which settlement should be called as town? I think all "taluka" or tehsil places should be called as "town" by default. Also there are many big villages which don't have taluka status because some political or geographical problems but they are as big as any small taluka place and has same population. We can include such villages too.--Human3015TALK 06:13, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Human3015: A statutory town as per 2011 census is any settlement which is a nagar panchayat, municipality or corporation are called as Towns. Census towns can also be considered.--Vin09 (talk) 06:21, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
- @Vin09: You will not believe but there are many taluka places which have GramPanchayat. And their population is around 15,000-20,000. What such taluka places should be called? Village or Town? As such places are taluka place, they supervise around 150 villages, even such small talukas having GramPanchayats are head quarter of around 150 villages, they just don't get Nagar Panchayat only because of political negligence, people think that if they upgrade their panchayat then taxes will increase, so they oppose. But they deserve to be called as "town". --Human3015TALK 06:33, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
- But we need to follow census official reference, over the time they will get upgraded and we can add with reference. But as of now Census of India and any official websites are enough.--Vin09 (talk) 06:34, 19 September 2015 (UTC)
