[edit]Re. DW's query: I checked. Gandara, as a young artist - around 1884 - lived with his parents and brothers 10 rue d'Orchampt (Paris 18) on Montmartre. At that time, he was associated with the "Chat Noir" of Salis. It is only later that he became famous. PV.
Is this original work, or derived from another source? Can we fill in the full names of some of the people whose last names only are listed? -- Zoe
This guy, I think, will have to be removed from the Montmartre list of artists. As best I have found, and looking at the quoted age/success, he was a Paris elite artist and had nothing to do with the poverty stricken bunch in Montmartre who came there for the cheap rent. Someone should check it out....DW

Name issues
[edit]We're being very inconsistent with his name. The title is "de La Gandara". The lede, however, starts out as "de la Gándara". We then refer to him as "La Gandara" (no accent on the first a), but in the next sentence as "Gandara". In the para that starts "Gandara illustrated a small number of publications ...", he's also referred to as "La Gandara", then as "Gandara" again. The next para has a similar issue.
So, is it:
- A: Antonio de La Gandara (in which case his surname is La Gandara)
- B: Antonio de la Gandara (in which case his surname is Gandara)
- C: Antonio de La Gándara (in which case his surname is La Gándara), or
- D: Antonio de la Gándara (in which case his surname is Gándara)?
The sequence of references in the text is A-D-A-B-B-B-A-B-B-A-B. The photo caption is version D.
External sources are not much help, as all 4 variants are found. We need to decide which variant is the one we want to use, and stick to it consistently.
Fwiw, I'd suggest the La (capital L) is part of his surname for sorting purposes. The only thing I'm not sure of is whether the a acute applies. That would have been the original Spanish spelling, but he was French. -- JackofOz (talk) 08:25, 4 May 2009 (UTC)
- @JackofOz: You're right, he was French, born in Paris. This accent in his surname makes no sense in French at all. Four years later you decided to move to the current title (with acute accent); you decided for this move based on what? if you don't have a strong argument in favor of the accented version, I'll suggest returning to the previous title. —capmo (talk) 23:04, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
