Michael, why have you changed all the caps from things like GPRS to Gprs? This is inconsistent with other technical terms and acronyms in WP. Otherwise, I'd like to change them back. Fuzheado 23:32, 6 Jan 2004 (UTC)

It's consistent with general Wikipedia style; to write gratuitous capitals is not generally done on Wikipedia. I've left the abbreviations (e.g., GPRS) in capitals, and gotten rid of the superfluous capitals in the words, thus making it consistent with Wikipedia's usual conventions. What would make you think Wikipedia typically does otherwise? Michael Hardy 23:50, 6 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Sorry, I've been doing a write up on my own Wooten desk. It is Wooten. The Wooten Desk Company, Indianapolis, Indiana, Founded by William S. Wooten in 1870. For more info: [1]

Wooten desk is mostly Wooton desk

[edit]

Hello! I am delighted that somebody else is interested enough in the Wooton Desk to write an article on it.

But the desk (and the name of its inventor) is spelled Wooton and not Wooten as you can see if you consult these Web pages (and others by doing a search on Wooton desk):

http://www.kshs.org/cool/coolwoot.htm

http://www.architecturals.net/tip.cfm?articleID=3013

http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/ah_antique_furniture/article/0,1801,HGTV_3086_1389862,00.html

This is why, some time ago I wrote an article on the Wooton desk

Instead of your article on the Wooten desk, there should be a redirect from Wooten to Wooton or from Wooten desk to the already existing article on the Wooton desk, since Wooten is one of the common mis-spellings of Wooton. But I do not know how to convert an article into a redirect!

Where could we go to find this out? AlainV 04:43, 2004 Jan 13 (UTC)

Thanks again. Here's what i need: The deathdate given for "Holbach, Paul-Henri Dietrich, baron d'" (searching for "holbach" should do the trick). Also useful would be the references they give for the article, as I suspect that they have gotten the month of his death wrong.) Best, snoyes 06:16, 15 Jan 2004 (UTC)

It is rather strange that EB do not give any references for the article. But I have checked some other encyclopedias at the library, and it turns out that there was a change (at least with encyclopedias) in specifying his death date to June (as opposed to January) sometime in the 40's, 50's or very early 60's. I guess there must be a good reason for that, so I'll do some more enquiries with more primary sources. Thanks for you help. --snoyes 02:55, 16 Jan 2004 (UTC)

The WNBA as awhole does not face financial problems because the NBA backs the the league up.

True, but just because the NBA helps subsidize and underwrite losses doesn't mean the WNBA can be considered financially healthy or viable. I think something to express this would be good. Fuzheado 04:09, 26 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Elf

[edit]

Hmm, I'm curious why you reverted User:64.173.9.44's change to User:Elf. I think it was just Elf, forgotten to log in (the edit history of Agility (dogs) seems to bear that out). Given that Elf is a newbie, he/she might get a bit weirded out, so perhaps you might consider dropping Elf a message so she/he knows they didn't do anything wrong. -- Finlay McWalter 04:23, 26 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Elections explanation

[edit]

Yeah, i know what you mean; ideas would be welcome, and i'll stare at it some more looking for ideas.

IMO its only virtue is that it's replacing something that was utterly misleading. --Jerzy 05:13, 2004 Feb 5 (UTC)

I'm chagrined to realize that it was your recent edit i had updated over, and then dissed, directly to the author. Your edit didn't work, but it deserved more courtesy than i gave you, and more effort to empathize with your honest efforts to solve the complex task that i have also not adequately solved.

I think you'll understand that i meant in saying "misleading" to express that i realized you were not just ignorantly editing where you shouldn't have, but rather forgot a subtlety of the topic and fell into one of the conceptual traps that is inherant in it.

On the other hand, i think "utterly" was an uncalled-for sledgehammer of a word, and i apologize for it. It was important to make another try at it, but "utterly" discarded all the nuances of the situation, including the fact that you were clearly on the right track even tho the minor slip you made was serious in its overall effect. --Jerzy 06:57, 2004 Feb 5 (UTC)

Nelson Mandela

[edit]

The Wikipedia article says that Nelson Mandela briefly switched to Islam and changed his name to "Mohammad Mandela" during that period.

Try a google search with different spellings of Mohammed. WhisperToMe 03:57, 14 Feb 2004 (UTC)

According to the page, these two books helped build the article...

Anthony Sampson; Mandela: the authorized biography; ISBN 0-6797-8178-1 Nelson Mandela; Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela; Little Brown & Co; ISBN 0-3165-4818-9 (paperback, 1995)

Maybe one of them mentions this... WhisperToMe 05:31, 14 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hello,

Tell me, I have been wondering all day why you reverted the smile 62.39 offered to me on User talk:Papotages. What was wrong ? Was there also vandalism practiced by the person on other pages ? Or was it an error ? I ask because this person is somehow a bit depressed, and has several times asked to be banned. So... Why ? Anthère0

Main Page protection

[edit]

Hi,

I'm not sure if you've noticed it, but the individual components of the Main Page, e.g. MediaWiki:Dih, are actually openly editable. The idea is that by moving this stuff into the MediaWiki namespace, we can unprotect the pages because there's a reduced risk of vandalism. The German Wikipedia has been doing that for a while and I've never seen any Main Page related vandalism there.—Eloquence 03:22, Feb 24, 2004 (UTC)

Hey,

Are you denying that "black propaganda" could also mean "propaganda produced by black people"?

--anon

If you can cite examples of it being used in significant ways, then it can be included. But just because it "could" be used doesn't mean it is. Also, questionable edits by anonymous users usually get reverted so don't take it personally. Fuzheado 14:45, 1 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Spambot

[edit]

Wow, great work on ko! Thanks for fixing it all. In case you didn't know, m:vandalbot and Wikipedia:Revert#bot_rollback have instructions on using &bot=1, which keeps recent changes tidy in cases of mass vandalism/spamming. Angela. 22:05, Mar 9, 2004 (UTC)

No, he seems to be using lots of different IPs. The whole thing is such a mess. I tried rolling some back, but another IP had already vandalised the same pages, so I was reverting to a different vandalised version, which I think I've fixed now but I have no idea whether there is any spam left. I made about 70 edits and deleted 14 pages, but I think there is probably more that I didn't find. It's a nightmare! Without full text search, it's very difficult to find out if there is any spam remaining. Angela. 23:53, Mar 9, 2004 (UTC)

User:Love over Money is very obviously Bird. As he is hard-banned, should I revert all edits he made as Love over Money? Under that name he started one fairly innocuous article, School book, and made a bunch of less innocuous edits to talk pages. Isomorphic 07:00, 10 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Kobe Bryant's accuser

[edit]

A redirect doesn't identify who she is (although people can figure it out, so it doesn't completely solve the privacy issue, true). But I think you had it right in the first place that the discussion belonged on the Kobe Bryant talk page. Gulangyu Island

[edit]

Dear Fuzheado, I have seen your picture on the Gulangyu page. Since we also have a Gulangyu page now in the German wikipedia, I would like to know whether it's allowed to use the picture. Since there is no copyright notice in your page, it would be deleted immediately from the German wikipedia, as -it seems- we are stricter with the copyright. Any information you can give me? Did you take the picture yourself? Kr, -- Herr Klugbeisser 19:47, 24 Apr 2004 (UTC)

In the German wikipedia, in order to avoid copyright infringements, it is demanded that the source of each picture is stated. So, for example, I will "borrow" your picture and I will state that user Fuzheado took it himself. For other pictures, it has to be stated that it is released under the Free Documentation License (or whatever this is called in English). So, I will take your picture (thanks!) and you'll see it in the German wikipedia. Nice greetings from Vienna, -- Herr Klugbeisser 12:17, 26 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Holidays

[edit]

Hello. I have thought of your question. And yes, I have a suggestion :-) This requires 1) a car (but I expect this is granted) and 2) at least 3 days, more days more nice things to see. I gather this with wikipedia references :-) I post it to you later tonight or tomorrow morning :-) But that all depends whether you rather feel like seeing cities, rather mountains, or perhaps more variety (my suggestion is more in this direction). Later Fuz. SweetLittleFluffyThing

Here is what I would do if I had 3 or 4 days. You better pick up a french map, and the wikipedia one is not very good (no precise map). Perhaps you may go and see wikitravel ? :-)

From Paris, the idea is to do that

You go from Paris to Clermont-Ferrand thanks to the high way (about 4 hours). This trip has nothing special. The scenary is correct, but nothing really special ihmo. First area to see would be Le parc des Volcans d'Auvergne. Around Clermont, is a volcanic area, very beautiful, very preserved. You may visit the Puy de Dome, which is the highest volcano (no volcano is active in France). I have a road trip of about one hour or two (depending on stops) that is highly recommanded for scenary. You may see the surroundings mountains, many lakes, and a whole bunch of very typical villages. May eat local typical food in many local restaurant. I think it should not be a problem to find place to sleep either. At any time, it is best to sleep in a real hotel, but you are totally sure to have always room in a hotel just near entrances of high way in case of need. Not very fun though. Anyway. Key words to look on the net is Auvergne, parc national des volcans d auvergne, puy de dome.

A great reference I often use to plan trip is www.mappy.fr. I have another one made by Michelin, but can't find it just now. I'll add it. Very precious.

Then, you may take the highway from Clermont Ferrand to Montpellier. Normally...I think it should be about 4 hours ? If you have a lot of time, I suggest that you may spent a day in Cantal, that is another set of volcano, very wild, under Clermont Ferrand. Beautiful as well. Key words (cities) are Bort les orgues, Riom es montagne, Mauriac. A very interesting city to visit (it is not very big) is Salers. Lots of stuff to buy as well. But plan one day for this, and sleep locally (careful no highway around). The moutain is Plomb du Cantal (you should see this on maps)

In any cases, get to the Montpellier highway again, and go down. The highway is quite new, free (unusual) and surroundings beautiful. If I remember well, it goes in good part through "Les causses", le "larzac" (Jose Bove home). That is already mediterraneen climate. I may suggest you to settle a bit around Lodève. Great place, perhaps one place to sleep ? There is a fortified city not far, the name is escaping me (I had written it down, but the kids obviously used the paper for drawings).

Then you have to go through Montpellier (probably not so fun). And I may suggest that you cross the Camargue that day (on a map, it is between Montepellier and Marseille. It is the major flooded area in France. Very special. Rice and wild bull culture :-) Go have a look at Saintes Marie de la Mer perhaps. That is the main camargue city, or just the surroundings splash of water :-)

You may then go on your way to Marseille (there are some good road, or probably highways). And here, what you should *really* do, is to go to Cassis. That is a small city just east of Marseille. Very typical. Between Marseille and Cassis, there are some geological oddities we call Calanques. You may go have lunch (or spent the night) around Cassis (you have many hotels in Marseille otherwise), and go and see the calanques (by car, some by foot only, or take a boat in cassis to see them from the sea). Great stuff. Have a bouillabaisse for dinner. (fish soup). This is really to do (okay, I lived in Marseille during 2 years).

Finally, pick up the highway all your way to Nice (perhaps 2h30). You may of course, imagine to get out of the high to see the outside a bit, but you may do that from Nice as well of course. If you do so, go see St Tropez :-)

There you are. If you do not go to Cantal, I suggest that you do that in 4 days if you can (one sleep in Auvergne, one sleep in Lodève, one sleep in Cassis). One day for each of the stop I suggested. Tell me what you plan to do, I can give you more.

Also, when you are in Paris, buy the guide du routard and Le Michelin. You will have all roads, and many suggestions for what to visit, as well as adresses for where to sleep. In may june, I do not think you need much time to plan this. You will have no problem to find free hotels, so you can plan this when you are in France itself.

Normally, you should always find someone with bad english to understand you :-)

Cheers. Do not hesitate to ask for more. It will be my pleasure :-)

SweetLittleFluffyThing 05:43, 30 Apr 2004 (UTC)

You are welcome Fuz. Just do not hesitate to drop a word any time... I am not seriously on holidays until august...though I have the immense pleaeure to have 5 days off next week :-)))) ant

Hi Fuzheado. I think you were a little quick to delete ???? - OK, it was a slightly unnecessary article, but I'd argue not quite a candidate for speedy deletion. Apart from anything else, it was the first non-vanity entry created by a new user - I'd have liked to encourage him that his contributions were welcomed when he wasn't talking about himself/his friends! It's not a big deal, and I'm certainly not going to bother with votes for undeletion - I just thought it was worth mentioning. --ALargeElk 12:21, 14 May 2004 (UTC)[reply]
