Call letters

[edit]

I though the letter W was the first call letter for any radio station in the United States east of the Mississippi River. However, this station appears to be an exception. Why?? 66.245.108.151 16:50, 6 Apr 2004 (UTC)

  • It's because WWVH is what is known as a "utility" station, not a regular broadcasting station per se. You could say the same thing about WWV. It's west of the Mississippi, but it's also a utility station. Denelson83 22:40, 6 Apr 2004 (UTC)
  • WWV used to be located near Washington, but since it couldn't be heard well in the western part of the country (much like CHU) it was moved to Colorado in the 1960s. It was supposed to get a "K" call at that point (KKK according to legend) but an act of Congress allowed it to keep its "W" call.[citation needed] Since it is common practice in most radio services to give related stations similar callsigns, WWVH (as well as WWVB and WWVL) ended up with "W" calls as well. While that is the general policy now, the K versus W thing was not always a constant, just like three letters versus four. Here is some history discussion. - Davandron | Talk 03:43, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting article about WWVH history

[edit]

I don't have time to integrate it into the article, but here's an interesting article from September 1949: Experimental Standard-Frequency Transmitting Station WWVH. Noting it here for later use by whoever gets around to it. 71.41.210.146 (talk) 22:45, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
