Correction
[edit]254 is the maximum number of rupees in The Legend of Zelda, not 255.
It seems inaccurate to say that 255 is the largest value that can be represented by eight binary digits. Rather, eight binary digits can represent 256 unique states, not necessarily numerical values. If the states are interpreted as values, the value can be any assigned value, not simply the numerical values 0..255. For example, in computing, if the value represented by the eight bits is assigned a sign (positive or negative), then the largest value represented by the eight binary digits is actually either 127 or 128, because the assigned values range can from -127..128 or -128..127 (depending on convention).
page move
[edit]I moved this page to 255, created 255 (year) and made 255 (number) a redirect. pielover87 02:14, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- i agree wit you that 255 the integer is more intersting, but wha about consitsency? do we really want to move every page 1 (number) - 1000 (number) to 1 - 1000 and those to 1 (year) - 1000 (year)? whabout those more interensted in history than mathematics? Numerao 16:49, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
- I undid the move, it is against the rules. The article about a number x, has to be at "x (number)". I moved this text from talk:255 back to talk:255 (number). Oleg Alexandrov (talk) 23:41, 15 December 2005 (UTC)
"So expect to see the numbers 9223372036854775807 and 18446744073709551615..."
[edit]Those two paragraphs that I just took out never quite sounded right to me. Anton Mravcek 22:24, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Sentence Removed "127 is the maximum value of a signed integer"
[edit]This article is about the number 255. That sentence isn't related to the number 255. --Eric Silva 01:15, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
External links?
[edit]What about adding some kind of links about computers/games/programs where the number 255 occurs like a limit? --Eli77e 18:43, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
I've also noticed not one mention of the early Sonic games is mentioned. Despite the lives counter only using 2 digits, it is possible to have 255 lives. (there are a few glitches that allow you to underflow past 0, resulting in 255. It looks liek Y5 on 2 digits.) 81.109.164.2 (talk) 00:55, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
