LOL... I just noticed your earlier post on Wikipedia talk:Standard user greeting. Yes, those are posted to new users' talk pages. You weren't greeted for a few days (the greeters are human, so we don't get everyone as soon as they show up) so you happened to stumble on our templates before you'd experience a greeting. Bots

from the village pump

The wikipedia:alphabetical index page says that the page was created by a bot. Does anyone have a copy of the source for this or any other similar bots that they could share with me? I'd like to collect a complete list of all pages in the wikipedia namespace and use it to create a topical index (with, hopefully, other people's help.) Michael Snow created the list at wikipedia:alphabetical index so you could try asking him on his talk page (user talk:Michael Snow) if he has the source for the bot. There is already a topical index at Wikipedia:Utilities. Angela. 16:01, Apr 13, 2004 (UTC)

There is some good code for bots still in development, but functioning partially anyway called pywikiapi. See pywikiapi.sf.net the code is in the cvs which you can access here. { MB | マイカル } 15:20, Apr 23, 2004 (UTC)

MediaWiki namespace

The only index I know of is Wikipedia:All pages in the MediaWiki namespace, which corresponds to Wikipedia:List of pages in the Wikipedia namespace. In other words, it's alphabetical, includes all the talk pages, and is mostly useful for people who want to use Related changes to track changes in that namespace all at once. I don't know how many people would use a topical index myself, but that doesn't prevent you from creating one.

However, you might want to take into account that when the new template syntax is incorporated with the release of MediaWiki 1.3, a lot of the custom messages will end up in a different namespace. Check out http://test.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page for more information. Depending on what information you're trying to index, you may want to wait until after the release. I wish I could tell you when that will be, but I don't know if anyone really knows. --Michael Snow 15:37, 27 Apr 2004 (UTC)

By Meta, I take it you mean the Meta site. The reference isn't always clear, mostly because people don't always use the term consistently, as you may have noticed. For example, some people will refer to pages in the project namespace as "meta pages", and until relatively recently when you were on a Wikipedia talk: page, the sidebar link to the actual page said "View meta page".

So why do we have both? Well, the Meta site is there to handle issues for all Wikimedia projects generally. So a lot of the stuff related to Wikipedia in other languages, other projects like Wiktionary, and the technical side of things ends up on Meta. I'm not sure that I can describe a clear or strict division between what the project namespace covers and what Meta covers; people don't always agree about what belongs on Meta. But in theory, Wikipedia: pages should mostly apply specifically to the English-language Wikipedia.

That being said, many Wikipedians use Meta rarely or never at all. If you want to be logged in to edit, you have to log in separately on Meta (the same is true of other projects). Many people also find the content haphazard and not very helpful. I don't know of a real index to Meta, so there may be some benefit if you want to develop one. --Michael Snow 20:25, 28 Apr 2004 (UTC)

I started from Wikipedia:List of pages in the Wikipedia namespace, which is periodically refreshed by User:Reload, who I assume is a bot. I don't know who is responsible for creating the bot, but you might ask User:Tim Starling, who created the similar page Wikipedia:All pages in the MediaWiki namespace. Presumably a similar bot could do the same kind of thing for Meta. --Michael Snow 23:47, 3 May 2004 (UTC)
