User talk:TUF-KAT/Gospel to fair use

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What do you think of the first sentence of Gospel music claiming that gospel derives from blues and jazz? I'd be inclined to say the genres developed fairly independently, with modern gospel making use of both blues and jazz. I've heard a cappella gospel songs from the early 20th century which make use of nothing but simple melodies, with others from the same era that have intricate interweaving melodies reminiscent of parts of classical music. Koyaanis Qatsi 02:34 15 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Hm, well, I'm not sure if I should change it, or how to say what I'd change it to. In fact, if I were to do it at all, I'd be inclined to rip off what you wrote.  ;-) Koyaanis Qatsi

There should be some mention eventually of gospel music's ancestor for, spirituals. BTW, Kid Ory among others who knew him said that Buddy Bolden got a good bit of his inspiration for forming the style later to be known as jazz "primitive Baptist" black church music. Anyhow, kudos on your work on tackeling such a wide range of musics! -- Infrogmation 06:30 16 Jun 2003 (UTC)

I did. It's because I am part of a cabal intent on controlling Wikipedia by keeping silly nobodies out of it. I bet you wish you were part of my cabal, then you could do the same... (sorry, no gurlz allowed) Tuf-Kat

Can gay guyz join? I've deleted something too that wasn't on for a week. But it was all Zoe's fault, so it was. :-P She wrote something that had two meanings, and I took the wrong one . . . *sob* so I guess that nasty GrahamN will start following me around *sob* Can we kick him in the nuts, Cabal-Master? Can we? Please. Please. Please!!! Or send messages in his name to DW/Joe Canuck, so then he can have Joe being really really really nasty to him . . . please . . . Cabal-Master . . . and can we make Zoe an honorary guy, call her Zoel? Pulease? *grin* FearÉIREANN 06:27 17 Jun 2003 (UTC)

But I don't drink guinness, hate it in fact. I drink an ale called Smithwicks -pronounced Smid-dicks (you haven't lived until you have heard French, Belgians or Italians trying to say that word in a bar, asking for smuid-wikks with a barman pretending not to hear so they have to keep trying to pronounce it! over and over and over again) Oh and I am blond - I dyed my hair last week again. I can blend in the growing amount of grey by being blond. Black/brown tends to mean just how grey I am getting can be seen. (I personally blame wiki for my greyness!) I've noticed you've done quite a lot of work on the various "music in .." pages and wondered if you would like to take on the main music page, which is currently a bit stubby. --Eloquence 01:13 20 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Could you add something on the copyright status of the image on No Dice (Image:BadfingerNoDice.jpg). Fair use? GFDL? Who created it, anyway? (etc - blah blah blah).
Have a nice holiday from Wikipedia :) Martin 13:26 20 Jun 2003 (UTC)

thanks :) Martin

do you know anything about Kruder & Dorfmeister? I just posted a rudimentary article about them, but the one article I have of theirs (K&D Sessions, which I don't mind telling you has been on constant rotation since I bought it 3 months ago) doesn't say anything about them inside. I've just found a few sites discussing them, briefly--e.g. VH1 and Rolling Stone, and a page with a fairly biased writeup of them that didn't tell me much I didn't already know (that the person likes their music, and that they've remixed some fairly well-known songs). Anyway, maybe this isn't your kind of music. Just wondering. Koyaanis Qatsi 05:16 28 Jun 2003 (UTC)

You have a friend who's not a wikipediholic!? Is that for lack of trying?  ;-) Koyaanis Qatsi 05:44 28 Jun 2003 (UTC)
So I guess it follows that you wouldn't know immediately how to sort out the general mess of contradictions at electronic music and various subgenres? Because I wouldn't either, and I'm having trouble finding sources I consider authoritative. Certainly I don't consider allmusic.com authoritative. ^_^ Koyaanis Qatsi 06:27 28 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Hello, TUF-KAT. I have read the reference you left me, but it is incorrect. No book on Greco-Roman mythology speaks about Lucifer or Aradia (Herodias), but books on witchcraft do. Herodias, deriving from the Jewish princess, who was against John the Baptist because he rejected her love, was turned into a goddess in early times of Christianity, and possibly in Tuscany, because it was cited as happening in Italy. Lucifer was never part of the Greco-Roman pantheon, and less a brother and consort of Diana. That tradition is posterior. There were warnings concerning this worship in Christian acts from the 10th century. I had left a message on the Village pump. If I acted in a disgusting way to your mind, I offer you my apologies, and it can be changed again, but I thought that the changes I made could avoid confussion among users. I insist in the fact that Herodias (Aradia), as a daughter of Diana and Lucifer, has nothing to do with Greco-Roman myths, and Diana, in those religions, was considered a virgin goddess; not in Wiccan tradition. Any suggestion or whatever, please let me know. Thanks. The Warlock 06:43 28 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Sorry, I forgot to add that the reference you left me is incorrect only in part, for it says Italy (Tuscany), and not Roman mythology; and that Wicca is a syncretic religion that took beliefs from others making some changes as all syncretic beliefs, and Aradia is revered mainly in Dianic Wiccan tradition; Wiccans have taken some traditions and practices from what was known as "witchcraft" and "heresy" (I am not a Christian and I am respectful of all beliefs). I don't think the change I made was in expense of another tradition that is not extrinsically mentioned by your reference, just, precisely, a differentiation between both beliefs. The Warlock 07:28 28 Jun 2003 (UTC)

A page explaining the historic origin of the name Aradia (Herodias), Herodias and an Early Dianic Cult has been created and linked to Aradia's page and to Sabbath (witchcraft), being that Herodias was related to a Dianic cult associated to witchcraft by the Catholic church. I think this is going to make clearer the subject. The Warlock 10:38 29 Jun 2003 (UTC)

"Stan"

[edit]

User:194.51.2.34 has objected to the amount of lyric-quoting in Stan (song), thinking it might be a copyright infringement. They have cut out everything but the first paragraph, replacing the rest with a single sentence. I think perhaps a middle path would be better, but since you appear to be the one who contributed most of the content, I thought I'd ask for your opinion first. Please comment at Talk:Stan (song). Thanks... -- Oliver P. 16:14, 22 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Welcome back. Can you please look at what I have been doing on the country music page. I started with a new intro but kept going on the theme that there are two strands to country music. Hi, I see you added links to Culture of Bermuda and music of Bermuda on the Bermuda page, but those pages don't exist (yet)? Are you planning on doing them, or what? Also, shouldn't it have been Music of Bermuda? Noel 19:40, 16 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Hi, regarding your listing of Lorraine G. Bay and Mary Alice Wahlstrom on the VfD page, I don't entirely understand what has been done with 9/11 related personal pages. My question now is, I wrote an article on Jeffrey Collman because I could not find one here, so: A.) did I create a redundant article, or, B.) should it be moved somewhere else? I am currently writing an article for Collman's surviving partner, Keith Bradkowski, who has been in the news lately and I'd like to know if the Collman article should stay. (Bradkowski is newsworthy in his own right, but Collman is only newsworthy due to 9/11, if that helps any.) Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer! :-) Paige 22:39, 17 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Thanks for the redirect of Merchant Marine. vudu 03:27, 23 Sep 2003 (UTC)

Unfortunately I know nothing of the Merchant Marine outside of the US, as far as I know, it is unique to the United States, although I could be wrong. The reason I wrote about it was because it was high on the Wanted list and a number of my favorite writers (Kerouac and Selby come to mind at once) served in the USMM. I'll look into it and get back to you. vudu 03:43, 23 Sep 2003 (UTC)

No problem and thanks for writing it. It might inspire me to write some more about it, I just don't like starting articles for some reason. I used to work in Datchet so I should be able to write some more about it really. Angela 02:55, Oct 26, 2003 (UTC)

Hi TK. I don't know if you have been following the debate on the Mother Teresa page. It may not be a topic of interest to you, but as a longterm wikipedian, the interest of NPOV is. We are currently voting to assess the nature of the problems with the page and how it can be salvaged. Your experienced voice would be more than welcome. lol FearÉIREANN 04:45, 27 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Cuba etc

[edit]

Hi TUF-KAT, I recently encountered Music of Cuba. A great start on a fascinating topic! One comment: it has so many red links that it looks like an American flag! Don't get me wrong: I think that there should be articles on /all/ the topics in the Wiki. It's just that some of the subjects are quite esoteric, and it may be many years before an expert on the topic presents him/herself. I would like to tweak the article a bit, add a few things here and there, and I was wondering whether you would object to my de-linking some of the more obscure items. In the articles I've created, I only leave red links to articles I plan to write the same day or for articles for which there are already a few red links in other places.

Hi, you're the person who added Amenhotep as an alternative transliteration for Imhotep. here. Can you tell me what your source was? You're not by any chance confusing him with the Amenhotep who was an architect for a later king (also called Amenhotep, confusingly)? Thanks! Noel 13:06, 28 Oct 2003 (UTC)

They made you change your username because it was 'offensive'? Sounds like bullshit to me...

How is toking 'offensive' to begin with? Pope Pius XII seems more offensive to me... Considering that he was affiliated with the Nazis... But apparently wikipedia isn't about even remotely approaching the truth--it's about 'NPOV', apparently...

Hey TUF-KAT, I made some changes to the Music of Albania article (thanks for writing it) and I also left a couple of questions in the talk page. re: four-elements of hip hop

[edit]

That's fine if you don't feel the page merits its own entry, however, the 9-elements of hip hop are real. And KRS-One did state them when he first founded the Temple of Hip Hop, and he also proclaims them in a few songs. Lyrics to the Song Hip Hop Knowledge ... now I suppose if any other rapper had said this it wouldn' matter too much, but KRS has been attempting, since the mid 90s, to put forth a new image for hip hop. He would often say, "Hip hop is not something you do, but something you live." Through foundation of the Temple of Hip Hop he has attempted to redefine a lot of things, and I think it merits entry in an encyclopedia such as Wiki. Dead 16:09, 12 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Moving things

[edit]

Your changing of ".... cuisine" to "cuisine of ...." is wrong. French cuisine, Chinese cuisine etc.. is a style of cooking with various ingredients and methods of preparation, that can be enjoyed in any country. On the whole it is not food limited to a particular nation state. Mintguy 10:41, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC)

I don't understand why you felt you had to move a page with a perfectly good title page like "British military history" to "Military history of Britain". What is the point? On google "military history of britain" brings up 80! yes just 80 hits. "British military history" brings up 4,660! Mintguy 10:50, 14 Dec 2003 (UTC)

Hi TUF-KAT. First of all Happy New 2004, of course. I would just like to ask you how did you manage to put together articles about Bob Marley's albums? I must say - great work! Is it possible to make such fine collection for Burning Spear's discography for instance. I volunteer for the job, since I own almost all of his music. I just don't know how can I obtain covers of the albums. Any help is appreciable. I've already put his 'whole' discography in plain text to Wikipedia and I hope the data is mainly correct. Images of musicians

[edit]

Hello TUF-KAT, I've done the imaqe on Minstrel show. Nice shots, by the way. However, I have no idea what to do with the other images, because in all cases the articles have no corresponding text section. The NZ article covers Maori and modern music, but the image is some (caucasian) plantation workers making music. The SA article has no real section on traditional music, so where'd the Zulu picture go? Same for England: nice images, but where are the text sections they'd belong to?

If you could give me some hints as to what you had in mind, I could do these images, too. It's no big deal. (Or you could get the Gimp and do it yourself :-) Lupo 16:41, 25 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Hey, TUFFY! I wanted to ask a favor of you. For about two years now, the Joan Baez article has been a single sentence. Being the musical wunderkind that you are, could you possibly do her a little justice? Please? Danny 00:33, 27 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Joan Baez, man. You rock.  :) - Hephaestos 01:47, 27 Jan 2004 (UTC)

I would classify the musics as ethnic, since much of it is secular, rather than religious. Also, although there isn't an article on Ashkenazi music, there is an article on klezmer music. The other two would be cantorial music, and modern hassidic music. I will look through Idelson (he wrote the book on Jewish music, even if it is eighty years old), to see what else he has, and get back to you. Danny 10:57, 27 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Hi Tuf-Kat. I have no problem with mediating the case you mentioned. I might as well prove my inco -- er, Solomonic wisdom. Can you email me privately details about how to start the process, etc., offline? Meidation on Palestinian views of the peace process

[edit]

RK and Martin invited me to mediate at Palestinian views of the peace process, but now Martin is saying that you might be a better mediator. The conflict is not about whether the article should be merged or whatever, it's more about how such information should be presented on Wikipedia. Personally, I think you'd be a better mediator than me because you were much more involved in the creation of the mediation comittee. It seems that you haven't had any conflicts with RK, something which is fairly rare (neither have I or Ed Poor, but I think we're the only active sysops who haven't). Hiya! I like the sound clips you've been adding, had been thinking of doing the same thing myself for a while. However I took the liberty of shortening one to see what you thought of it (BrickHouse.ogg, just using that one as an example of what I'm getting at). I think 1) shorter clips will give us a stronger fair-use claim, and 2) they don't take so long to download.  :) Let me know what you think. - Hephaestos 05:26, 9 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, it's not on my contribs because I just overwrote the one you uploaded (although of course yours is still there if you want to revert back). Clips I think should be "definitive" while being as short as possible; I think I nailed that on Brick House but I may be biased toward myself.  :) I don't have a whole lot of jazz, more blues actually. I'll definitely have a look at the page and see if there's anything I can contribute. - Hephaestos 05:47, 9 Feb 2004 (UTC)
I have aboud 160 Jazz songs (Essential Jazz collection, 8 discs, I can't seem to find a link with the song titles and performers). Let me know if you're looking for something in particular. I am a bit worried about the fair use claims though. How long can a clip be? What kind of quality? Dori | Talk 05:57, Feb 9, 2004 (UTC)

OK, I have uploaded them and linked the clips at User talk:TUF-KAT/Samples of music from the United States. I haven't yet done the image descriptions though, and I don't know when I'll get around to it (i.e. adding the artist names, etc). Dori | Talk 19:47, Feb 17, 2004 (UTC)

Hi, I saw the "album box" you added to I Against I, is there a wiki-page on those? Thanks, Paige 23:27, 13 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hi TufKat. Thanks for your message, I am just back from (absolutely great) holidays :-) I probably won't have things settled back to normal until at least 24 hours :-) I only have about 50 personal mails, plus 80 digests from Wikipedia to look at. Plus one kid is sick :-( I will look asap at the issue in question in case Mav and 168 are still in trouble with one another. fr0069 15:04, 15 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Bureaucrat status

[edit]

There's a new class of users who can turn other users into sysops. This could previously only be done by developers (such as myself). These users are called "bureaucrats". I've picked a few users from Wikipedia:Administrators who I think would make good bureaucrats, and you're one of them. Please don't take that as an insult. ;-)

Do you want to be a bureaucrat? If you say yes, I expect you to keep an eye on Wikipedia:Requests for adminship and turn users into sysops in accordance with community consensus.—Eloquence 04:24, Feb 17, 2004 (UTC)

Samples

[edit]

Hey TK, the inclusion of music samples seems like a great idea (providing it's clearly legally OK, which I assume you have already determined it to be), but my system doesn't know what to do with these .ogg files even though I have Windows Media Player and Quicktime installed; is this a widely-used music format? Is there some reason not to use the more widely-supported .mp3 format? Jgm

Butting in...Winamp can play Ogg Vorbis files just fine. If you want another program, try Audacity which can also help you edit sound files. The reason Ogg is used instead of MP3 is that Ogg is an open source, unencoumbered format. For MP3, the different players would have to pay a fee. In your mythology infobox template, what do you mean by "Symbols"? Is that the conceptual equivalent of the Christian "patron saint of ___"? Rossami 22:36, 17 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hi, maybe you remember, I was made admin recently. I just want to clarify a small issue. Can I can delete some images uploaded by me long ago which do not link to any page now and others which have been replaced with better/ smaller versions. Thanks KRS 18:03, 19 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hi TufKat, you asked Wik and RickK which mediator they would accept on Wikipedia:Requests for mediation Isn't that one on hold as Wik has been referred to the Arbitration Committee? I'm feeling a bit lost as to where all of the mediations are at the moment -- sannse (talk) 22:11, 21 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Thanks TufKat - that's much better. I was trying to do similar but got lost sannse (talk) 09:30, 22 Feb 2004 (UTC)

SNL list; thanks...

[edit]

Thanks for fixing the formatting of many many musical performers on the SNL list. I wasn't familiar with most of them, so I just made my best guess on how to format the names, and I was wrong on more than one count. Good stuff... -- Seth Ilys 13:31, 22 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Hiya Tuf... can you revisit Image:AphexTwinICareBecauseYouDo.jpg? I noticed that it didn't have any "fair-use" tag or other copyright information, so I added the unverified tag to it. Thanks! --LarryGilbert 02:50, 2004 Mar 2 (UTC)

Hi, I was hoping you could come over to Wikipedia:Votes for undeletion to cast your vote on the undeletion of Honourable Ve'ehala. Anthony DiPierro 17:15, 3 Mar 2004 (UTC)
