Voltage and Current Surge

In an avionics circuit with power and a number of devices attached what is current in rush and surge, and what are the cautions/preventive measures to be taken.

In an incandescent light bulb there is a piece of wire that is designed to have, when the rated voltage is applied, just the right impedance for the current to be no less than to make that wire give off enough light, yet no more so as to make that wire melt ("burn out"). Usually the impedance depends on the temperature of that wire, it being (much?) less while cold, and therefore at the very beginning of switching on the current is (much?) higher than normal, for just a short time, and there is what is called a current surge.

• A squirrel cage motor, one of the many kinds of Electric motors powered by AC, starts off running with a current surge that is roughly about 7 times the normal current.
• A DC-operated motor starts off running with just its resistance plus that of an external starter rheostat in circuit, causing an initial current surge, but as the speed increases a voltage is created that opposes the applied voltage so that the current decreases to normal; also then the resistance of the external starter rheostat can be reduced slowly to zero.
• In a circuit containing an inductor the voltage across that inductance can at times increase above normal for a short time, and there is what is called a voltage surge. Sometimes the light bulbs for just a short moment may give off more light than is normal as a result of a voltage surge created by some outside source.
• Computers and other electronic equipment can be damaged by voltage surges, and surge suppressors are available to prevent such damage.

Arthur Netherwood born 1864 died 1930, British. Exhibited many works at the Royal Academy and the Royal Cambrian Academy (of which he was a member) and in the provinces. He worked in oil and watercolour usually depicting views of towns and villages or country scenes. His works sell from around £150 to around £800. However, be careful as there are prints in circulation.

A Netherwood was born in Huddersfield. RCA stands for Royal Cumbria Academy. Served on Conway Borough Council for 25 years. Moved to Shrewsbury in 1923. One of his sons, Norman, was a painter

Intense Pulse Light treatments - scars

Hello,

I am of East Indian origin and have recently had Intense Pulse Light treatment to remove a few moles on my face. Even though I was assured by the lab technicians than this treatment does not leave behind any scars, I was left with a scab on two of the treated spots followed by a dark scar. This was last October, 3 months ago and despite the application of Vitamin A & E creams, the marks are still there, just a little lighter. Is there hope that they will eventually disappear? The lab technicians keep reassuring me that they will. The reason it is taking so long is because I have pigmented skin. Please advise as to what I can do to hasten the process of clearing up.

Althougt the application of topical Vitiman A and E are very good, you may want to look on the internet, or in beauty magizines for diet tips to help with your skin healing. Everyone has pigmented skin, (even a scot), except for Albinos. If you are of East Indian Origin, you must possess some of the most beautifull skin in the world. You can speculate that rope was in short supply, due to the war, and curtan ropes would not be plentifull either. A belt would be the most handy, haven taken a few in a haste to evacuate. What other type of cord would be in plentifull supply, that would be commonly used for women to hang themselves? A scarf? Not likely givene the date.

What does it mean when a person is said to prefer loose shoes?

Such contation does not exist any. In my graduating law school class their was a conservative Muslim woman, always wore head scarf, it seems like she sometimes wore those types of shoes.

Thanks. Since you have VBSCript running, and you have other things attached to text files besides text, I would suggest that you regualary scan for viruses, using a tool with the latest virus definitions. ( I do this at the beginning of every day I turn on the computer. )

African American Discovery Trail brochure.

I am looking for information about a brochure that was published back in 1997. It was called the "African American Discovery trail" Can anyone help me locate this brochure. I have been able to get resources of where I can go to copy the brochure but I want to see if I can get it already a pre print bonded somewhere. I know at one time it did exist.

Sidereal vs Tropical Year and Procession of the Night Sky

I was reading about the length of the year and the different measures thereof. If I understand correctly, the fact that a sidereal year is about 20 minutes longer than a tropical year (or a vernal equinox year) would mean that a constellation near the celestial equator such as Orion which is curently only visible in the Winter (since it rises during the day in the summer), will in approximately 13,150 years time, only be visible in the summer (because the procession of the equinoxes will move about 180 degrees in that time). Does anyone know if this is correct?

It is correct, assuming that you remain on the Northern Hemisphere, above the Tropic of Cancer, you will see the Orion ( Winter constellation ) in the summer.

It has to do with the earth's precession in rotation.

The diffrence btween the sideral year, and the tropical year is:

Sideral Year: 365.242199. Tropical Year: 365.25. Diffrence = 0.007801 Days. 0.0078 Days = 0.187224 Hours = 11 Minutes 14.0064 Seconds.

Army Shoulder Cords

What are the guidelines and regulations for wearing the Army Branch Shoulder Cords on the right shoulder. Can't find anything on this.

AR 670-1 only specifies the guidelines for wearing them on the uniform, not for earning them.

These are not aiguilettes, which Staff wear, These are shoulder cords of of the color of every Branch in the Army. The most prevalent is the Infantry (Light Blue).

What butterfly species ?

User Donarreiskofferhas uploaded several butterfly pictures and released them under GFDL. Pictures were taken in a butterfly garden, so they don't have species information. Also it is not known where on the Earth the species are from. Does someone recognize what species they are? I think Image:Butterfly_zwin2.jpg looks a lot like zebra heliconian and Image:Butterfly zwin8.jpg thoas swallowtail. I need other people's estimates. I am interested in any information on the % of African Americans that celebrate Kwanzaa. Is this proportion rising or falling? Hi, Can anyone supply me with a track list (music, that is, not racetrack) from the PC videogame Rollcage Stage 2? I know two of the tracks on it - track 2 is Control by MKL and track 3 is Surrender by MKL. Also, the music on the PC is not the same as on the Playstation version, which was used as the basis for the album "Rollcage Stage 2: the soundtrack"

"Millimeter waves"

In my copy of New Scientist's 100 things to do before you die suppliment, it discusses "millimeter waves" as being rather like a real version of the "x-ray goggles" that used to be advertised in magazines. It says merely that they are between infrared and microwaves in wave length, they pass through clothing and reflect of anything contain water. It goes on to say that law enforcement agencies use "millimeter wave cameras" which can frisk people from a distance.

I've never heard of any application which exploits the electromagnetic spectrum at these frequencies. It would be quite an innovation though I think. I'm sort of curious about the sorts of transitions that this would cause in the water molecule which would prevent it from "passing" through it. Jaro Hess was born in Czechoslovakia in 1895, into a well to do family. His father was an engineer in a steel mill. Young Jaro learned to speak German from his governess. In 1916 he painted a watercolor of a tranquil lakeside scene. At some point he emigrated to America, where he worked in the steel mills of Gary, Indiana, and later owned a successful landscape gardening firm in Michigan. During World War II he worked in an aircraft factory in Virginia, and also as a tool designer. His brother was Alexander Hess, a much-decorated Czech pilot. In 1975 Jaro Hess won a second place award at the Grand Valley (Michigan) artist’s show for his painting “The Jungle,” which he described as a fantasy. Jaro Hess died in 1981.

And that’s all we know about Jaro Hess, except for one other thing: In 1933 he entered another of his paintings, “The Land of Make Believe,” into a competition at the Chicago World’s Fair, where it won an award in the Children’s Literature Division. A mystery in that painting has been driving us, and many of our customers, and (through the wonder of email and book chat groups) people all over the world, crazy for the past month or so, and so now we’re doing what we should have done in the first place: We’re asking you to help solve it.

Many of you remember Sarah Robinson, who occupied this space in the newspaper some years ago. Sarah is a good friend of ours, and also a good customer, and also a prolific reader, and also a doting grandmother. She was also a child once herself, and one of the things she remembers from her childhood is the beautiful poster which hung in her bedroom. It depicted many scenes from children’s books, and Sarah remembered it so fondly that she wished to give the same poster to her own grandchild, and also to give the child copies of each of the stories depicted on the poster. After a long search, Sarah did in fact find the poster on the internet, and did in fact order copies for her grandchild. That poster, it turns out, is a copy of Jaro Hess’s World’s Fair painting, “The Land of Make Believe,” and it is in fact stunningly beautiful. Our jaws dropped when we saw it.

We saw it when Sarah brought the poster by the store, and asked us to order whatever books were necessary so that her grandchild could pick out any scene on the poster and then be able to read the story it represented. “No problem,” we said, and then proceeded to eat those words, for it turns out that we know far less than we think we do. There are 60 scenes on the poster. We pretty quickly identified 44 of them, but that left 16 we just could not figure out.

Again, because we never learn, we said “No problem.” We would just ask the help of our customers, who we thought knew everything. But rather than ask about 16 obscure scenes from children’s literature, we thought we’d just ask about one at a time, so we picked out the most intriguing of the 16 and emailed our entire customer list and asked, “Do you know of a character in children’s literature called The Wonderful Moo-Moo Bird?”

Nothing we’ve ever done has created so much uproar, to so little effect. There have been scores of guesses, but no correct ones. People stop us on the street to ask if we’ve found the right book. One lady got mad at us, because she thought we knew the answer but were withholding it (we don’t). Many people have done a Google search and discovered a book, The Brown Moo Bird, by Aymon de Sales, but it was published too recently, in 1970.

So now we turn to the person we obviously should have started with – YOU! Please, help put an end to this. Call, write, email, or come by the store, but please tell us: Who – or what - was the Wonderful Moo-Moo Bird?

I think a dilute solution of buckminsterfullerene in benzene (or even toulene) should give a pretty colour. It would be good for the article, as it would impress on the reader that buckminsterfullerene is indeed a novel substance. What is the history of the Ethene industry?

I found this shell stone on the beach at Redcliffe (Moreton Bay, in Queensland) when I was six years old in 1970. I always carried it in my pocket. Years later at high school, I was sent to the Science Master to get 6 cuts from his cane for playing up. I whipped my shell stone from my pocket and engaged him in conversation about it: "Ahh! An Operculum!" he said. Completely forgot about whacking me. Can anyone identify the gastropod from which it came?

Dante's Divine Comedy dramatised: characters individiualised by dialects & languages

I am in the final stages of writing an Italian/English dramatisation of Dante's Divina Commedia. Naturally, it contains a lot of talk and it has occurred to me belatedly that the characters could be individualised with accents or an occasional word or phrase appropriate to their region, time and status. The dialects/languages are mostly of Italy but there is also Latin, French, Frankish, Aramaic and Greek. I can supply Dante's words (with English) for the character(s). Can anybody help me? All contributions will be responded to and contributors will ultimately be acknowledged in the dramatisations's Programme.

I can supply - not dialect words - but anyhow a related hint. In February 2004 the City Theatre of Gothenburg, Sweden <http://www.stadsteatern.goteborg.se/pressrum/press.asp?fst=dante> presented a highly praised stage dramatisation of the "Commedia". It ran in Swedish, which is not your line. But you might perhaps get interesting impulses from another scenic version of the story.

After Leon Trotsky's death, was Frida Kahlo for or against Stalin?

Hi Wikipedians! I have been learning about Frida Kahlo, and it seems that there is an inconsistency b/w the descriptions of Frida's political affiliation after the death of Leon Trotsky within the entry for Frida Khalo and the entry for Diego Rivera.

Diego Rivera entry says:

"Following Trotsky's Death Rivera and Kahlo both became Anti-Revisionists/Anti-Stalinists." NOTE - Who writes this crap? you couldn't be anti-revisionist and anti-stalinist. The anti-stalinists were the revisionists!

Frida Khalo's entry says:

"Sometime after Trotsky's death, Frida denounced her former friend and praised the Soviet Union under Stalin. She spoke favorably of Mao, calling China "the new socialist hope". Her home was decorated with socialist art, including portraits of Marx, Engels, Stalin, and Mao."

...uh, which is it? NOTE - I would suggest the Diego Rivera entry is clearly at fault since it is a contradiction, Kahlo's entry appears correct, though I would reccomend reading a BOOK if you actually want to learn something. Every entry on wikipedia is full of innaccuracies and misinformation

Diego Rivera was also friends with Trotsky, originally allowed Trotsky to stay his secure estate, when he found out Trotsky was with his wife he made leave, the home trotsky aquired was less secure, making easier for a homeinvading asassin to get him. After trotsky was killed Rivera blamed himself for trotskys death.

Coastal Survey Schooner Phoenix

The Coastal Survey had acquired Phoenix from the U.S.Navy in late 1845. In November of 1845 Coastal Survey Schooner Phoenix sailed from New York to the vicinity of Mobile Bay and was the first vessel of the Survey on the Gulf Coast. In 1847 she was used for hydrographic studies but was soon relegated to the role of providing transportation and housing for triangulation and topographic parties for the remainder of her life in the Survey. The Coast Survey Schooner Phoenix was a typical Coast Survey vessel with a length of 70 feet, a beam of 17 feet, and draft of 7 feet. The Phoenix served with the Survey until 1857 and her final disposition is not known.

I am looking for additional historical information regarding this schooner as well as any images (line drawings or photographs)of the schooner.

Name on back of vintage photo 1880-1900

I cannot read the name on the back of a very old Cabinet photo that I have. It is from the Odessa, Washington area and probably dates in the 1880's. I believe that the photo is of children of imigrants that came to America. The name on the back of the photo looks like it could be Hebrew. I am resaerching my family history and it has been brought to my attention that my family may have been involved in supplying the scaffolding for Cleopatra's Needle on the Embankment, London.

My ancestors were of the surname Parsons, and I think it may have been a George Robert Parsons involved with the Parsons and Sons haulage contractors of Commercial Rd London.

Just a long shot but would you know anything about this or where I could look to try and authenticate the story.
